The Route

THE ROUTE

The route we finally settled on would take 9 days.  We thought that this was a fair assesment of our ability and fitness, and also was a good enough challenge to warrent the sponsorship!

The route itself was a south to north one, taking in 20 counties starting in Corwall; the hell of cyclists. If attempting this ride, please make sure you respect Cornwall.  It is hard work no matter what point you take it at, the start or the end of the ride.  We did it on day one and chucked in 9 miles of Dartmoor just for good measure (which results in complete exhaustion!) and it took a lot out of us.

From there we headed up towards Bristol and over the Severn Bridge (there is a cycle lane on the M48 bridge) towards Hereford.  A straight line all the way to basically Carlisle allows you to knock off a lot of miles in a few days.  We had a small detour to allow for us taking in a night a friends house near Glasgow, but this added only maybe 20 miles onto what we would have done.  We then used the A82 to Fort William and Inverness before taking the A9 and A99 all the way to the very north of the country.

We settled on averageing around 110 miles a day, giving us about 8 hours a day on the saddle if we averaged around 15mph, which we invariably did!
